How to find & buy best air compressors

8 Air Compressor Buying Tips:

Have you ever realised the importance of air to human life? Importance of air in human’s life is immense and it is required by humans not only for breathing but also for a host of other purposes as well. Air benefits all living organisms and is useful to humans in a number of ways. It is used widely in several other areas, particularly in the business arena. A lot of businesses use compressed air as an integral part of many manufacturing, industrial, commercial and automotive applications. Process of compressing air forms a large proportion of the total cost of the installation of industrial plants. Here are a few things that you need to consider before you settle on an air compressor either for domestic or industrial use. They will certainly go a long way in helping you select the best air compressor for your needs.

1. Electric compressor or natural gas compressor?

Air compressors work by two different ways. The first is an air compressor that is powered by electricity. The other is the kind of air compressor which is powered by gasoline. Consider the source of power available to you. Consider the fact that the electric air compressor will prove to be more efficient in terms of costs and maintenance while a gasoline model will be more portable and would therefore allow you more choices where you can use it.

Industries are able to save more and by reducing costs of consumption by using the compressors that operate on natural gas. However, if your compressor has to work in a closed space, it is wise to install an air compressor run by electricity in order to be safe from the harmful fumes that may be hazardous to your health and may jeopardise safe and clean working environment of all workers.

2. Two stage or single stage compressor?

If the plant operates at a high level and needs an air compressor that serves its purpose for heavy duties, then a two-stage compressor is advised. A two-stage compressor is more energy efficient compared to a single stage compressor due to the fact that the two-stage compressor produces more air per unit of horsepower and generates less heat thereby providing a longer span of service life.

3. Will it suit my requirement of load?

Find out what is the psi requirement of your work. If it is above 150 psi go for a two stage compressor as a single stage compressors can provide you only up to 150 psi whereas a two-stage compressor can provide air pressures up to 200 psi. Two-stage compressors are more efficient performers for higher air pressures requirements.

Work out your requirement of horsepower which is necessary for the job that you’re going to employ your compressor on. Most of the motors power rating ranges from 1.5 to 6.5 horsepower. A higher horsepower engine provides more PSI (per square inch) and can carry a heavier load of work, but the CFM or cubic feet per minute is the most important consideration. Heavy air compressor will also be able to store large amounts of air required for use in the future.

However, horsepower is often deceptive in some cases. Some manufacturers mention starting horsepower while others report the operating horsepower of the compressor. As a matter of fact, operating horsepower is generally five to seven times less than the starting horsepower.

4. Portability:

Find out Whether your air compressor is going to be stationary or portable. If you’re going to move it around or transport it, consider the size, weight and power source. The units With higher pressure and volume are larger and heavier. On the other hand, there are portable air compressors that are at your will to be moved from one place to another.

5. Balance between budget and minimum requirement:

While buying an air compressor, a buyer should also take into account the efficiency of the compressor equipment. Obviously, one wants a purchase that is economical but it should also capable of carrying out what is expected out of it. What do you do with an equipment that will not survive the difficult challenge that you need it to undergo?

6. Safety considerations:

When considering air compressor to buy, do check the standards of quality and protection features that the equipment adheres to. Ensure that the air compressor that you are finalising to buy has a safety valve relief to escape air if the pressure in tanks exceeds the maximum, a guard on belt for protection purposes and an indoor air filtration system. Obviously, there can be no compromise as far as the safety measures are concerned.

7. Attachments:

Compressors need to be secured with attachments that will be used to connect the air tube to it. A common tool used in the air compressor is a blowgun, a nail gun, pins air, air sander, and a shotgun or air ratchet wrench. A blowgun uses compressed air to blow away dirt and dust. These tools are widely available in hardware stores and must be bought along with the compressor for effective and regular maintenance.

8. Budget:

Decide how much money you want to spend. Inexpensive units do not last as long and you usually get what you pay for. If you buy one too small for the jobs you plan to do, you will not be productive. If you buy one that’s too large, you’re wasting your money and resources.

Three Tips for you to remember when choosing your best air compressor :

1. Always consider your budget before grading various compressors.

2. Think about the compressor’s expected lifespan and its ease of repair so that you have an easy and efficient after sales service.

3. Striking a balance between power and economy will be tough. Take a wise decision.

It is advisable to research about air compressors before making any purchase. A buyer must read air compressor reviews to become aware of the users experiences of the air compressor that he has shortlisted among many.

This air compressor buyer guide will enable you to buy the air compressor that is most suitable for your needs, taking into consideration the criteria of space, power requirement, economy and safety. You will be able to make a better informed decision on which air compressor to buy when you go to buy one next time.

DEWALT d55146 200-psi compressor with wheels reviw

After my last cheapo compressor died in a horrible texturing accident (after five years of faithful service, may it rest in peace at the landfill), I felt like it was time for the real deal. Things that drove me to pick this model in particular:

- Wheels, beautiful wheels — last one was a dual tank 70 pound behemoth. This compressor is heavier, but those wheels make life so much easier. Granted, I could’ve used a hand-truck before, but having it all integrated as a single unit is a huge bonus. Not looking forward to the first time I get to heave it into the truck, but for now, it gets around the shop just fine. The handle extends easily and quickly for smooth portability.

- 200 PSI, will I ever use it? Well, um, not likely. However, the more important numbers: 5.4 CFM at 90 PSI is pretty great. Opens up alot of options in terms of running a variety of air tools. While I probably won’t ever run more than two framing nailers at a time, this compressor should have no trouble with any other air tools I could conceivably use.

- Low noise. At least, lower noise. Air compressors are noisy beasts, no doubt. This one is pretty tolerable in comparison. Fair warning, the 15 minute, no load warmup period is the noisiest this compressor will be. Once the warmup is over and you close the drain to start building air pressure, the RPM cycles down (almost sounds like it’s laboring at first, but it chugs away all the way up to an honest 200 PSI). The normal cycle on is at about 160 PSI, and it runs at around 1750 RPM. It’s pretty calm sounding, again, as compressors go. No accompanying vibration.

- Price. It’s not cheap, but this compressor compares very favorably to others at this price point in terms of features and technical details.

So far I’ve only used the compressor for finish and brad nailing. The Dewalt has proven way overqualified for that job. No problems at all to this point. If issues develop in the future, I’ll edit the review.

Only gripe thus far: One of the wheels was flat when I opened the box. The tubes are replaceable 410/350 x 4 utility tubes. I just did some creative flat repair. Luckily I had a reliable source of air to pump the tire back up! Take note, if you have a tire that goes flat while the unit is stored upright, it will fall over . . . so keep an eye on the tire pressure.

DEWALT d55167 1.6 hp portable compressor review

This compressor is a real knock out.It goes up to 200 psi, That means more tool time before recharge compared to other copressors with same tank size. Robust, Tank just feels thick, nice handles, guage protection.

I have used this with an air hammer for destroying concrete, automotive work etc.
It is a nice tire fill compressor because you can pump it up to 200 and wheel it around your cars and fill up without running the compressor.

It is loud, it is a compressor.
When draging it over objects be sure not to band the drain valve protruding from the bottom.

It’s beutiful too.

I bought this to replace my little 2 gallon compressor that I bought from Lowes. I was doing some wall texturing with the old one and it was painfully slow and loud (120psi, 0.3cfpm) and had difficulty keeping the pressure at even 40psi.

The work looked too heavy (attempting orange peel). With the Dewalt, I can make it through a complete load of the hopper without the compressor turning on at a steady 60psi. The texture comes out even and just right. Even when the compressor does come on (at about 160psi), it fills quickly and much quieter than my old compressor.

It’s still louder than a belt compressor would have been but it cost half as much. Overall I’m very pleased with this unit. I’m not a professional, just a DIYer. This compressor definitely fits the bill.

Makita mac5200 big bore 3.0 hp air compressor review

As you read the reviews below, you will see there have been many complaints about early failures and poor workmanship on this compressor. After receiving three shipments of this compressor to satisfy the one I ordered, I have concluded many of the workmanship and failure issues are the result of a poor packaging design by Makita. This is a heavy compressor and while Makita used heavy corrugated cardboard for the box, it is insufficient to keep the compressor from being damaged during shipping.

Two areas of improvement are needed from Makita. First, in the current design the compressor cover and tank sit right up against the inside wall of the box. Any side impact WILL dent the tank or crack the compressor chamber cover (both failures I experienced). The box is too narrow and insufficiently padded with extra cardboard to allow for side impacts (even gentle impacts). Second, the weight of the compressor is resting on the wheels.

While the wheel hubs are designed to move the compressor to different locations, the hubs are not strong enough to handle dropping/bouncing during shipping, resulting in bent wheel hubs (one failure I experienced). Makita needs to add cardboard under the compressor to support the entire weight of the compressor and take the weight off the wheels during shipping.

Amazon has been great about replacing the damaged compressors, but plan on a delay as you will likely not have a working compressor on the first delivery. Also, inspect the sides of the tank, the wheels hubs, and the compressor crankcase cover (hairline cracks).

In two cases, there were no signs of damage to the outside of the box, yet damage was apparent once I opened it. I am very happy with the compressor, but Makita is wasting a lot of money and peoples time shipping compressors back and forth due to poor packaging. I hope Amazon can bill Makita for the extra deliveries Amazon is paying for.
